Since 1919, Americans have set aside November 11 to remember the sacrifice of our service men and women and their families; to take a moment to say “thank you” for a debt that no words or even actions can ever repay. At CSU, we’re proud of our ROTC heritage, proud of how our students support veterans’ programs, proud of how our alumni and friends of the university have stepped forward to create best-in- class scholarship and support programs for our veteran students. But none of this holds a candle to the pride we feel in the men and women who have, through their actions and sacrifice, put service before self. Each of them swore an oath to defend our nation. The word “oath” takes its derivation from proto-Germanic languages meaning “to witness to a truthful promise.” Let us set aside some time today to witness that these men and women have fulfilled their oath — they have been truthful to their promise. Let us, in turn, commit ourselves to providing whatever we can to assure our support to those who have served, those who have been injured, and those who have lost loved ones. And to ensure, inadequate as it may seem, that they have our enduring gratitude.
