On this day of remembrance, Colorado State University is proud to pay tribute to our women and men in military service — and to honor the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation and our freedoms. Among those we remember today is one of the true greats in CSU history, Lt. Col. John Mosley, who passed away on Friday — one of the distinguished Tuskegee Airmen, the first Black football player on record at our University, and a remarkable, inspirational human being.

This is an important day for our nation, but it doesn’t have to be strictly a somber one. As we gather for the traditional holiday barbecues and activities, we are enjoying the freedoms that others have fought to defend. This time with our family and friends, this ability to gather and share our views, cultures, and histories, are worth celebrating — as is the memory of those, like Lt. Col. Mosley, who have helped to make it possible.

As a community, we are incredibly proud of the veterans among our students, faculty, staff, and alumni and grateful for all that they and generations of others have given. We are grateful, as well, to their families, who have sacrificed so much on our behalf.

Today, let’s celebrate those who returned and honor those who did not — and let’s live our lives with the conviction that we will never forget.
